"This Song is meant to keep you Doin' what you're supposed to Wakin' up too early Maybe we could sleep in Make you banana pancakes Pretend like it's the weekend now"

Are these not the most comforting lines in any song? I can feel myself curling into a ball, pulling the blankets tighter and falling back asleep every time I hear Jack Johnson's song. In fact, when I was in high school, I would purposely set an alarm for 4 am just to be able to have the best feeling of falling back asleep. To this day, I still crave those "just 30 more minutes." However, I stand here today to tell you that sleeping in is no longer the best feeling; pretending it's the weekend is a trap.

Lately I have been "doin' what [I'm] supposed to" and waking up every day at 7 am and after the initial grogginess, I noticeably feel ten times better than sleeping in has ever given me. Admittedly, the temptation to snooze the alarm is overwhelming at times, but to ignore that instinct, stretch out and get out of bed, I guarantee translates to a better feeling that lasts all day long.

Instead of waking up at 9:30 for my 10 am class, I have now read for 45 minutes, made a delicious breakfast burrito, and drank a cup of tea as I prepared for the day. I have found that making time to read every morning as a habit is the perfect way to start an effective day. By simply reading 20 pages a day in the morning, you can finish a 300 page book in only two weeks. Think how easy that is! Think about everything you can open your mind up to just by making a conscious decision to not hit the snooze button!

So, Jack, while sleeping in is a great feeling for that half hour, I urge you to not "wake up slowly" and start the day feeling fresh. Try this for a week and I promise you will never go back.
